Members of the Sachse City Council approved increasing the speed limit on Ranch Road during the Jan 4 regular meeting from 30 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour on the portion from Maxwell Creek to Hwy. 78.

Before the vote, City Engineer Gregg Peters said staff recommended that the speed limit on Ranch Road be increased based upon the improved road condition resulting from the completion of the road as a four lane divided roadway. Therefore, recommending 40 mph or 35 mph as the speed limit on Ranch Road.

He discussed the road composition, geometry, and characteristics.

“The road has one significant curve near the intersection of Hwy. 78, and is classified as a minor arterial road,” he said.

During the Whitt Elementary School’s student drop off and pick up times, a 20 mile per hour speed limit in the school zone is enforced for further pedestrian safety.

“Outside of school hours, Ranch Road has regular pedestrian activity especially along the north side of the road,” Peters said. “The road is lined with brick screen walls on each side for the majority of the length of the road. Those walls limit pedestrian movements away from the pavement surface.”

In other business, council approved extending the Ranch Road school zone to include a new crosswalk.
