Special events, and how the city will deal with them, was the topic of discussion at Sachse City Council last week.

Parks and Recreation Director Lance Whitworth presented the item to council stating that over the last several years the city has seen an increase in special event requests from outside organizations.

“Most of the events consist of races or walks that are used as fundraisers for a variety of organizations,” he said. “Staff presented a rough draft of the special events application several months ago. Staff also presented the recommendations from the council to the Parks and Recreation Board. Park Board members discussed and made the changes recommended by Council.

The most recent version has the recommendations from both Park Board and City Council.  Members of the council approved an ordinance providing regulations and requirements for special events held in the city.

Whitworth said special event ordinance, along with an application, would formalize the process for organizations requesting events in city.

“There are requirements in the application that organizations will need to follow,” he said. “These requirements are not to restrict organizations but assist in making their event the best it can possibly be. The policy will streamline the process for an organization to apply, review and receive approval for events in a timely manner.”
