SACHSE — The Mustangs came through with one of their best defensive performances in recent years with a 35-14 lambasting of Lakeview Centennial this past Friday at Williams Stadium.
The victory, which came in Sachse’s 10-6A opener, improved the blue and white’s overall record to 5-0 and 1-0 in district play. It’s something Sachse will look to build upon this Friday, when it returns to the same locale to face Garland (2-4, 1-1). The Owls are coming off a 31-23 triumph over South Garland.
“We’re playing pretty good defensively right now,” head coach Mark Behrens said. “That was a great, great athletic quarterback (Kamron Fields) to contain. I mean, he has run and thrown on everybody this year. We felt like we couldn’t shut him down completely, but we felt like we had to contain him. We felt like we did a good job of containing him for the entire ball game. At the end, we kind of took over up front, and I felt like that was the difference.”
Among the top defensive performers was linebacker Riko Jeffers, who recorded five solo tackles, and had one sack and one fumble recovery, along with Nick Alexander, who intercepted a pass, two pass breakups, three solo tackles and three assists.
