A group of Davis Intermediate students spent the past year traveling the world without leaving their classroom.
For the third school year in a row, the multicultural club has learned about different cultures, tried new foods, talked to guests, made crafts and communicated with students from other continents.
In spring 2015, social studies teacher Kimberly David noticed a gap in what she taught. Her students wanted deeper knowledge about the countries they were learning about, but she didn’t have enough time to cover the state’s requirements as well as extra material. An after-school club was born.
“They have an opportunity to try new foods and learn new things,” she said. “I think one of the reasons kids come is the guest speakers – people that aren’t their teachers and have traveled different places. They like the idea of traveling and seeing places outside of Texas. That curiosity has peaked and it makes it interesting, so they keep coming back.”
