Sachse Police Sgt. Brent Merryman educated a crowd at the Senior Activity Center about scams that frequently target senior citizens Tuesday, March 12.
Elderly people are frequent targets for scammers because they often have more assets and larger bank accounts than younger people, said Merryman.
“And they are sometimes more trusting than younger people,” he said. “Many still write checks, retirees generally have more time on their hands and they can be lonely.”
Many of these scams take place over the phone or on the internet, said Merryman, like calls from “fake charities after natural disasters” and people claiming that a family member needs money to get out of a bad situation. He also mentioned calls from people claiming to be from Microsoft offering to remove viruses from your computer.
