COPPELL – The Sachse Mustangs and the Coppell Cowboys were involved in a chess match until the middle of the third quarter.
Coppell senior defensive lineman Uche Odimegwu and junior cornerback Tyree Roberson had two interceptions and the Cowboys’ defense kept Sachse junior quarterback Dirk Williams Jr. contained in a 31-10 Cowboys victory from Buddy Echols Field on Friday night.
Williams Jr. threw for 193 yards and a touchdown. Sachse senior receiver and Texas commit Kaliq Lockett caught a touchdown and had eight catches for 154 yards.
Sachse’s defense had a difficult time containing Coppell quarterback Edward Griffin, senior wide receiver Tucker Cusano and senior running back Omarion Mbakwe as the Cowboys hit their stride in the week-one home win.
With Lockett blanketed in double coverage the entire game, Sachse was unable to move the ball with two interceptions and a fumble. Late in the game, Griffin found a hole and ran 70 yards for the touchdown. Sachse hosts Arlington Lamar on Friday, Sept. 6.
