CERT trainees, such as those from the February 2024 class, will learn how to respond to emergency and disaster situations and much more.
Residents interested in helping make a difference in their community during emergencies and other times of need can receive basic disaster response training through the Sachse Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
The program’s next training course is scheduled for Feb. 22 and March 1, with both sessions required for certification. Once completed, participants will be eligible to join the Sachse CERT team.
Sachse CERT, a volunteer organization that assists the city in disaster preparedness and response, offers the training to equip participants with essential emergency skills. The two-day course, known as G-317, covers disaster preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, medical operations and disaster psychology.
Tricia Lindsey, Sachse CERT program manager and chair for the Regional Community Preparedness Programs at the North Texas Council of Governments, emphasized the critical role volunteers play in supporting the city, especially during severe weather events.
Following the May 2024 storm, CERT members assisted with damage assessment, debris removal and emergency response coordination. The team also played a key role in the city’s recovery efforts by documenting damage as part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) process.
“We train for these situations, and we are very happy to put those skills to work in assisting the community,” Lindsey said.
In addition to disaster response, Sachse CERT members provide support at city events and assist Sachse Fire-Rescue with firefighter rehabilitation efforts. The team, which currently has 32 members, is also preparing to assist with regional events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“Sachse Fire-Rescue has enjoyed our partnership with Sachse CERT for many years,” said Fire Chief Marty Wade in a statement. “This dedicated team is always willing to lend a helping hand when needed.”
The upcoming training course consists of eight units designed to teach participants how to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency. The training includes a capstone exercise, allowing students to apply their newly learned skills in a simulated disaster scenario.
The class is open to individuals 18 and older, or 16 with parental consent and participation. The cost is $25 per person or $40 per household, and breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided.
