Two of the incumbents for Sachse’s upcoming May 3 election who have filed for reelection now have challengers.

Councilmembers Lindsay Buhler (Place 5) and Matt Prestenberg (Place 6) have each submitted their applications for re-election.

Also running for Place 5 is Rafay Sheikh who has lived in Sachse for about 3 and a half years. For Place 6, Gurvinder Singh, who has lived in Sachse for 10 years, is challenging Prestenberg.

Mayor Jeff Bickerstaff filed for re-election last month and as of Tuesday morning, Feb. 11 has no challenger.

In the Garland ISD election, Larry Glick (Place 1), Johnny Beach (Place 2) and Linda Griffin (Place 3) have each filed for re-election to the board of trustees. Stéphane Rovelo has filed an application for Place 1 as well.

City council members and GISD trustees serve three-year terms and are elected at large, meaning they represent the entire city.

Candidates will have until Feb. 14 to file an application for candidacy.

Sachse voters approved term limits beginning in May 2023 during the November 2022 city charter election.

According to the charter, “no person shall serve as mayor for more than three consecutive elected terms and no councilmember shall serve more than three consecutive elected terms. No person shall serve as councilmember and mayor (combined) for more than six consecutive terms.”

Additionally, the charter states, “Any member of council who is ineligible to run for office due to limitations on terms, shall remain ineligible to hold an elected office for two years, with the exception of a councilmember seeking the office of mayor or the mayor seeking the office of councilmember.”

Bickerstaff, Buhler and Prestenberg were each elected to their current positions in May 2022. Bickerstaff previously served on city council from 2013 to May 2022.

The May 3 election will also include a special election for the re-authorization of the city’s existing Street and Maintenance Tax.

Collin College

Two Collin College Trustees are among four candidates who have filed for the college’s board.

Places 4, 5 and 6, each a six-year term, are up for this year’s Collin College election.

Place 5 Trustee Raj Menon of Plano and Place 6 Trustee Stacy Anne Arias of Melissa have filed for re-election.

Staci L. Weaver of Plano has filed as a candidate for Place 4 currently occupied by Trustee Greg Gomel of Plano and Justin Adcock has filed for Place 6 to challenge Arias.

Menon, who serves as treasurer on the nine-member board, was appointed in 2016, elected to a two-year term in 2017 and then won a six-year term in 2019.

Arias was elected to Place 6 in 2019 after previously serving 12 years in Place 5 before moving.

Weaver is superintendent of the Legacy Preparatory Academy in Plano and Adcock is a business owner from Plano.

The last day to register to vote or make a change of address effective for the May 3 election is April 3.

Early voting begins April 22 and ends on April 29.

Voters can also request absentee ballots starting January 1.
