Seniors pass the torch

by | May 8, 2025 | Education, Latest

Sachse High School senior Joshua Osakwe, right, prepares to greet a kindergartener at Mustang Stadium Friday, May 2. About 200 Sewell and Armstrong kindergarteners attended the event where seniors met them at midfield to give them small gifts in a symbolic “passing of the torch.”

A symbolic event last week at Mustang Stadium brought together the graduating Class of 2025 and GISD kindergarteners for what organizers say will become a new tradition.

Approximately 300 Sachse High School seniors gathered in one end zone, while 200 kindergarteners from Sewell and Armstrong elementary schools lined up in the opposite end zone. At the signal from an announcer in the press box, both groups began walking toward the 50-yard line.

The purpose of the event was for each senior to present a small gift to a kindergartner in a symbolic “passing of the torch.” As students met at midfield, Trace Adkins’ “You’re Gonna Miss This” played over the speakers.

Following the gift exchange, a group photo was taken. Sachse High principal Shae Creel then led the students in forming the Mustang U, and the seniors taught the kindergartners the Sachse High School chant: “You wish you were a Mustang.”

“Today, our senior Mustangs ‘passed the torch’ to our feeder pattern kindergarten friends,” Creel said. “The final chapter for these seniors is just a few weeks away and these are the first steps for the younger generation of Mustangs.”

“Next year will be even better,” he added.
