Whether it was on a football field, cross country course, volleyball court, basketball court, tennis court, golf course, or baseball or softball field, the Sachse Mustangs provided plenty of memories during the 2024-25 school year in athletics.
The Sachse News is proud to introduce the first installment in a three-part series celebrating the top athletic moments, student-athletes, teams, and performances from the past year. Categories for the inaugural C&S Media High School sports awards were selected by sports editor David Wolman, with winners published over three weeks.
Part 1 (July 10) includes the Biggest Story, Breakthrough Moment, Newcomer of the Year, and Best Team.
Part 2 (July 17) will feature Best Game, Best Finish, Biggest Upset, and Multi-Sport Athlete of the Year.
Part 3 (July 24) will wrap up the series with Coach of the Year, Most Improved Athlete, Best Female Athlete, and Best Male Athlete.
Here are the winners of the first four awards – biggest story, breakthrough moment, best team, and newcomer of the year.
Biggest story: Long district winning streaks continue
There have been some impressive streaks over the years for Sachse High School.
The girls’ volleyball team has never missed the playoffs, and that streak continued last fall. The Mustangs’ baseball team, meanwhile, won its third consecutive 9-6A title.
Just as impressive have been the Sachse football and girls’ basketball teams.
Led by a talented and experienced senior class, the Mustangs’ football team last fall conjured a second consecutive undefeated run through District 9-6A. Sachse has gone 8-0 in district play in each of the last two years and is currently on a 17-game district win streak.
The longest district winning streak at Sachse belongs to the girls’ basketball team, winners of 33 consecutive district games. The Lady Mustangs haven’t lost a district game in more than two years. Sachse went 14-0 in district play this year and did so in dominating fashion. The Lady Mustangs won all but one game by at least 10 points, which included a 78-18 rout of Garland ISD rival South Garland. Also, this season, Sachse won 31 games, a new single-season record.
Breakthrough moment: Swimmers make history
Sachse alumna Ashley Delhomme became the first swimmer in school history to compete in the UIL state swimming and diving championships.
Delhomme earned ninth place in the preliminaries of one-meter diving with a score of 260.95 points and took 12th place in the finals with a total score of 361.2 points.
Incoming junior Augustus Friedel was a first-time state qualifier. He finished in 15th place in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 49.83 seconds.
Newcomer of the Year: Trinity Thompson, girls’ basketball/track and field
Lady Mustangs head coach Donna McCullough trusted a freshman to handle the point guard duties. Trinity reciprocated the trust. She finished third on the team in scoring at 10.1 points per game and dished out 91 assists. But it was on defense where the 6-foot point guard made her mark. Named the 9-6A defensive player of the year, Thompson’s relentless energy sparked a Sachse defense that held opponents to 37.2 points per game.
Although an injury that she sustained during the second half of district play limited her to 30 games and forced her to miss each of Sachse’s two playoff games, Thompson got back in the gym and was medically cleared for the spring track and field season.
Thompson’s top-end speed helped to lead Sachse to berths in the Region II-6A meet in the 4×100 and 4×200.
She has received college offers in women’s basketball from Incarnate Word, Indiana, SMU, Southern Arkansas University, and Texas A&M.
Best Team: girls’ soccer
Ever since suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Tyler Legacy in the opening round of the playoffs two years ago, Sachse has used that loss as motivation.
After advancing to the third round of the playoffs last year for the first time since 2018, Sachse took it one step further. Despite having to replace 10 seniors from their 2024 season team, the Lady Mustangs conjured one of their best postseason runs in program history. The Lady Mustangs made it all the way to the Region II-6A final after defeating Rockwall in a shootout in bi-district, cruising to a 5-0 rout of Waco Midway in the area round, and toppling Klein Oak 3-2 in double overtime in the regional semifinals.
Although Sachse lost 1-0 to The Woodlands in the regional final, this was a season that the Lady Mustangs won’t soon forget.
