Sachse is home to some of the top teams in District 9-6A and the Mustangs showed during the 2024-25 school year of how talented they are in every sport.
From the football field to the basketball court to the baseball and softball fields to the track, the Mustangs racked up the wins, many in dominating fashion.
The Sachse News is proud to introduce the first installment in a three-part series celebrating the top athletic moments, student-athletes, teams and performances from the past year. Categories for the inaugural C&S Media High School sports awards were selected by sports editor David Wolman, with winners published over three weeks.
Part 1 (July 10) includes the Biggest Story, Breakthrough Moment, Newcomer of the Year and Best Team.
Part 2 (July 17) will feature Best Game, Best Finish, Biggest Upset and Multi-Sport Athlete of the Year.
Part 3 (July 24) will wrap up the series with Coach of the Year, Most Improved Athlete, Best Female Athlete and Best Male Athlete.
Here are the winners of the second installment of awards – best game, best finish, biggest upset and multi-sport athlete of the year.
Best game: Football team rallies for narrow win over Wylie East (Oct. 4, 2024)
The Mustangs had trailed only once at intermission through the first five games of the 2024 season, and the one time that they did, it was only by four points – Sachse fell behind Coppell 14-10 during the Aug. 30 season opener.
And while their halftime deficit against Wylie East was only seven points, the Mustangs knew that the Raiders were one of the toughest teams on their schedule.
But for a Sachse team that was on an 11-game district winning streak, the Mustangs were determined to not see the long streak come to an end.
Sachse’s defense held Wylie East to three points in the second half – a 35-yard field goal by Michael Delaney – and alumnus running back Brendon Haygood had a 26-yard run late in the game to ice a 19-17 victory for the Mustangs. Haygood finished with 180 rushing yards, 56 of which came on a third-quarter touchdown run. His runs helped to steer the ship for a Mustangs team that committed five turnovers. Quarterback Dirk Williams Jr. completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Braedyn Watkins with 2:13 left in the third quarter to give the Mustangs a 19-14 lead.
Best finish: Girls’ soccer outlasts Klein Oak in 2OT thriller (March 28, 2025)
After facing little resistance from Waco Midway in a 5-0 rout of the Lady Panthers in the area round of the Class 6A Division I playoffs, Sachse had a tougher battle on its hands in the next round against Klein Oak.
Neither team backed down from the challenge and the game needed double overtime to determine a winner.
Thankfully for Sachse, the right foot of alumna forward Raeya Carthon delivered a perfect ball when the Lady Mustangs needed it the most.
Carthon scored her second goal of the regional semifinals match halfway through the second overtime and Sachse held on for a thrilling 3-2 victory.
Incoming senior midfielder Kate McCallister scored the first Sachse goal.
Biggest upset: Girls’ basketball avenges playoff loss to Cedar Hill (Nov. 16, 2025)
Revenge was on the minds of the Lady Mustangs.
Although the game didn’t play a factor into Sachse’s chances of making the playoffs, the Lady Mustangs knew that this was an important non-district game.
Cedar Hill ousted Sachse in the area round the previous season after a nip-and-tuck game that ended with the Lady Longhorns winning by a final score of 49-45.
The Lady Mustangs came out on top in the rematch.
Paced by a relentless defense and timely offense, Sachse topped Cedar Hill 50-40.
Multi-sport athlete of the year: Cameryn Fair, volleyball/track and field
Fair showed again why she is one of the fastest high school sprinters in northeast Collin County.
The incoming Sachse senior won the District 9-6A title in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.9 seconds, added a second-place finish in the 100 and helped to qualify Sachse’s 4×100 relay for the area meet.
Fair placed in the top four in all three events in the area meet – second in the 100 and 4×100 and fourth in the 200 – and she competed in all three events at the Region II-6A meet.
On the volleyball court, Fair became a more focal point of the offense. With Sachse having lost their biggest offensive weapon, Favor Anywanu, to graduation, head coach Rikki Jones needed someone to step up and be a huge contributor alongside Kaelynn Sims.
Despite playing in nine fewer sets during her junior season as compared to her sophomore season, Fair more than doubled her kill total, from 47 to 101, earning her a selection on the All-District 9-6A second team.
