Local students are ready for class thanks to the Back 2 School Bash hosted by 5 Loaves Food Pantry last month. More than 300 children and their families enjoyed an afternoon of activities, food and supplies to start the new school year strong.
Northplace Garland was the location for this year’s event to better serve the 60% of food pantry clients who live in Garland. After receiving a backpack, students picked their own school supplies before taking part in face painting and watching balloon artists. In addition, attendees could receive a free haircut. Volunteers also served hot dogs, popcorn and cotton candy.
Outside of this event, the food pantry serves individuals in Sachse, Garland, Wylie, Murphy, Richardson and Rowlett throughout the year.
“We currently serve over 800 families each week through our food pantry,” Executive Director Rebekah Rodgers said.
Other 5 Loaves programs include a clothing closet, a diaper bank and a community garden.
The organization is celebrating 10 years of faith-based service, and events are planned to highlight this milestone. Coming up on Saturday, September 13, is 5 Loaves Night at the Frisco RoughRiders game. “Our goal is to have 200 of 5 Loaves’ biggest fans out there cheering on not just the baseball and the fun times but cheering on 5 Loaves as well,” Rodgers said in a recent video update.
The organization receives $5 for every ticket sold.
The second annual Deep in the Heart of Texas Gala in March 2026 will also be part of the 10-year festivities.
The North Texas Giving Day campaign will kick off Monday, August 25, with a goal of $50,000. The focus for 2025 will be on 5 Loaves’ impact on children facing food insecurity. Last year’s campaign raised $50,000 for the organization.
Later this fall, a ribbon cutting, featuring a few surprises, is scheduled to take place.
