The Sachse football team returned to the field Monday morning for the first day of practice.
District 9-6A has run through Sachse each of the last two seasons with the Mustangs having gone 8-0 in district play each year.
In search of a third consecutive district title, Sachse will turn to a new cast of players to lead the way and fill several holes that were left after the Mustangs lost 37 seniors and six FBS signees to graduation.
While the team’s experience level will drop, head coach Mark “Behrens” said that the Mustangs won at every level last season, from the varsity team to junior varsity and freshman.
One reason for optimism is the play of two-way starter at offensive line and defensive line, junior Trason Haley, who recorded 43 tackles and 11 tackles for loss as a sophomore. Junior linebacker Walker Williams also emerged as a breakout star last year. Senior quarterback Dirk Williams Jr. (1,616 passing yards, 17 passing touchdowns) has worked hard to improve his deep-ball accuracy.
Sache will host Coppell on Aug. 29.
