ARLINGTON – Facing fourth-and-1 from its own 29-yard line in a three-point game late in the fourth quarter, Sachse took a gamble on a play deep in its own territory.
The Mustangs trusted the legs of senior quarterback Dirk Williams Jr. to get the job done, and he did just that. He took the snap and patiently waited before bursting straight ahead for a two-yard gain to move the chains and, more importantly, burn valuable seconds off the game clock.
Arlington Lamar got the ball back with 1.8 seconds remaining after a Sachse punt, but the Mustangs’ defense made one final stand to earn the team a hard-fought 24-21 win from Maverick Stadium.
Lamar senior quarterback Jayden Shaw wasn’t able to get off a pass as time expired thanks to great pass coverage by Sachse’s secondary. Shaw was forced to scramble, and he ran out of bounds at Sachse’s 43-yard line on the final play of the game.
Sachse junior quarterback Christian McCaffrey went 3-for-5 for 100 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown pass to senior Marcus Rhoden that got the Mustangs on the board in the second quarter. Williams Jr. finished 7-of-10 for 85 yards while adding a team-high 80 rushing yards on 15 carries. He led Sachse on two touchdown drives in the second half.
The Mustangs improved to 1-1, while the Vikings dropped to 0-2.
