Sachse had two runners compete at last Saturday’s Class 6A state cross country meet at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

Junior Abigail Leonard was making her second appearance in Round Rock. She crossed the finish line in a time of 19:55, good for 122nd place.

Another junior, Samuel Ledbetter, made his state debut. He cracked the top 100, finishing in 94th place with a 16:20.

“I really liked the way they ran,” said head coach Kacey Laughery. “They stayed composed, executed their plan, and kept their focus through each mile. The race was fast, but they did not panic. They trusted their training. For them to qualify for state as juniors is a great accomplishment and an even better experience that will set them up for an incredible senior season and hopefully a all team bid to the state meet.

Overall, it was a successful season for Ledbetter and Leonard, who helped to lead Sachse to district titles on both the boys’ and girls’ sides in the same year for the first time since 2016.

Leonard keyed the Lady Mustangs’ run to the 9-6A crown with a district runner-up finish, while Ledbetter earned third place in the boys’ race.
