The Lady Mustangs (7-5, 1-0) had quite the battle on their hands last week.
However, the difference for Sachse in a 45-37 win over district rival Garland was an efficient third quarter. The Lady Mustangs outscored the Lady Owls 15-8 during that frame to rally into the lead after trailing 22-21 at halftime. Sachse outscored Garland during the fourth quarter by a 9-7 margin to clinch the victory.
Trinity Thompson had another standout performance in the win, finishing with 25 points. Arianna Gregory netted 12 points. The Lady Mustangs overcame a 22-point outing by Garland’s Kaylee Stephens.
The previous weekend at the Allen Hoopfest Tournament, Sachse went 2-2 with an opening-round win over Red Oak (41-35) and a three-point triumph over McKinney North (38-35) in their final game.
Meanwhile, on the boys’ side, in a game full of momentum swings, it appeared that Sachse had stolen the momentum for good.
Senior Matthew Hudgins rallied the Mustangs from a nine-point deficit in the third quarter to a 53-52 lead after making a 3-pointer with 4:03 left in Sachse’s Nov. 25 road game at Lovejoy.
Hudgins finished with 19 points for Sachse (4-5).
However, Sachse had few answers for Lovejoy’s offense and also struggled with shot selection as the Leopards finished on a 9-0 run to earn a 61-53 victory.
Trailing 54-53 with two minutes remaining, it appeared that Sachse was going to get the ball back. The Mustangs initially thought junior Alex Cheatham had traveled. Instead, he made a spinning layup as he was being fouled. He made the ensuing free throw to complete the three-point play, giving Lovejoy a five-point lead.
