Wylie used an unrelenting inside-outside offensive attack to roll past Sachse 76-39 Tuesday night in District 6-6A action.

The Lady Pirates improved to 2-0 in district play and 8-4 overall after an impressive opening district win over North Garland and an equally impressive win over the neighboring Mustangs.

“These are two good building blocks for us to start district play,” said Wylie girls’ head coach Nate Heckelman. “We brought the girls back on Friday after Thanksgiving and had a good two-hour practice, and that helped us a lot more than just coming back on Saturday after being off two days.”

The home team opened the game with a trio of long-range baskets from Mykaela Dalton, Shamya Johnson and Sade Mathes, respectively, for an early 20-10 lead.

“We were able to attack inside, which then led us to throw it to the wings and get some outside buckets. They are a very unselfish team that doesn’t really care who scores, but just want to play together,” Heckelman said.

In the second quarter, the Lady Pirates’ inside game did most of the damage as Wylie consistently beat Sachse down the court for a fast-break basket or easy layup.

Addison Montgomery got the fast-paced attack going by taking a long pass to the rim for a layup and a 31-14 lead before Mathes added another fast-break basket, and the rout was on early in the second quarter.

Mathes continued to work inside for a rebound basket that pushed the lead to 47-22 at halftime.

“We’ve got a lot of work left to do; we still need to keep this up,” added Heckelman.

In the third quarter, the Lady Pirates went back to the long-range game as freshman guard Peyton Kelly hit back-to-back 3-point baskets and then hit another from nearly midcourt, which came just seconds after the third-quarter buzzer had already sounded.

Ronelyse Hartfield led all Wylie scorers with 17 points. Mathes had 15, Kelly and Johnson scored 11 each, and Montgomery added eight. Arianna Gregory led Sachse (0-2) with 22 points, including 18 in the first half.
