Sachse relied on defensive pressure, balanced scoring, and late-game execution to pull away from Wylie East for a 51-40 road win Friday night in a District 9-6A girls basketball matchup.
The Lady Mustangs set the tone early, using tough on-ball defense and quick transition offense to build momentum in the opening quarter. Trinity Thompson knocked down a pair of free throws to spark Sachse, and Lily Burrow later connected from beyond the arc as the Mustangs opened a 12-4 advantage. Jayla Morris capped the quarter with a strong drive to the basket, giving Sachse a 14-6 lead after one.
Sachse continued to control the tempo in the second quarter. Thompson opened the frame with a strong drive to the basket, then capped a fast break to push the lead into double digits. Morris later jumped a passing lane and found Nailah Davis for another transition bucket, before Arianna Gregory added a tough finish inside to extend the advantage to 24-11.
Wylie East responded by switching to a trap defense to generate stops. Morgan Jennings provided a spark with a putback as the Lady Raiders trimmed the deficit, but Sachse’s ball movement and patience on offense allowed the Mustangs to maintain control heading into halftime with a 26-17 lead.
The Lady Raiders came out of the break with renewed energy. Sidney Sanders powered through contact for a layup, and Wylie East tightened up defensively, protecting the paint and hustling back in transition to cut the lead to 28-25 midway through the third quarter.
Sachse answered at the line and from the perimeter. Gregory converted a pair of free throws, then came up with a steal and drew a foul in transition to halt the run. Davis later knocked down an open three, and Burrow buried another triple late in the quarter to give Sachse a 37-31 advantage entering the fourth.
