Ever since seeing a 32-game district winning streak end Dec. 2, the Sachse girls basketball team has responded in emphatic fashion.

Last week’s game against North Garland was one of the most complete efforts of the season.

The Lady Mustangs used a 22-2 second-quarter run to pull away from the Lady Raiders after holding a five-point lead at the end of the first quarter, cruising to a dominant 64-32 home victory.

Senior Arianna Gregory and sophomore Trinity Thompson have been the Lady Mustangs’ top offensive threats, and they continued their dominant play against North Garland. Gregory nearly outscored the Lady Raiders by herself, finishing with a game-high 30 points, while Thompson poured in 29.

It was the third consecutive win for Sachse (11-6 overall, 4-1 in district play). The Lady Mustangs are off until next Monday, when they will compete in the 75th annual Sandra Meadows Classic in Duncanville. Sachse will tip off the tournament at 10 a.m. against Vista Ridge.

Meanwhile, the Sachse boys basketball team faced a much tighter contest.

The Mustangs needed overtime to defeat North Garland, outscoring the Raiders 5-0 in the extra period to secure a 43-38 victory. That decisive run came after North Garland erased a 27-24 halftime deficit to force overtime.

“We are a gritty and resilient group,” said Sachse head coach Micah Moore. “I thought we showed that in the way we competed in OT. Shots weren’t falling all game, so we made a concerted effort to get stops defensively and attack the basket on the offensive end. I was proud of these guys for pulling through.”

Senior Brayden Banks, who recently returned to the lineup Dec. 2 against West Mesquite after missing the first month of the season as he recovered from a knee injury, scored 11 points to lead a balanced offensive attack. Senior Matthew Hudgins added 10 points, followed by seven apiece from senior Jordan Anderson-Urune and sophomore Caleb Lindsey.

It was the sixth straight win for Sachse (10-6 overall, 3-0 district), with five of those victories coming by 10 points or fewer.

“We work a lot in practice on situational games, so I think that preparation is really starting to pay off,” Moore said. “It helps to have a senior lead team that has experienced these challenges before. Many of these guys know what it takes to win close district games. I think it gives our guys a ton of confidence to know that we are battle tested in close games.”

The Mustangs are also off for Christmas and will return to the court next Monday to open play in the Allen In-N-Out Holiday Basketball Tournament.

Sachse will face Mount Pleasant in the opening round at 6 p.m.
