The Sachse boys soccer team seeks a stronger finish to the season.
The Mustangs were as high as sixth place late last season before narrowly missing the playoffs. Shane Montgomery, who was elevated to head coach late last January following the departure of Benjamin Buentello, hopes to guide Sachse back into the postseason after a one-year absence.
Depth is a big reason for optimism. Sachse carries 26 players this season, an increase from last year.
Senior defensive midfielder Diego Hernandez, a three-year starter, provides leadership. Senior fullback Noah Escalante is a stabilizing presence for team chemistry, Montgomery said. Senior defender Jovanni Vazquez is dependable in pressure situations, while junior Aiden Ronquillo transitions from striker to center back this season.
Goalkeeper remains a position to solidify, with senior Mathew Aguilar currently holding the starting role.
Sophomore attacking midfielder Matvey Strelchik, a late-season varsity call-up last year, brings strong touch and vision.
Offensively, senior Cameron Sparks leads the Mustangs with three goals. Senior Daniel Dominguez and Ronquillo each have two goals.
