Sachse junior Augustus Friedel qualified for the Class 6A state swimming and diving championships in three events. He won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.74 at the Region II-6A meet in Rockwall on Friday and Saturday, earned second place in the 500 free with a 4:32.37 and teamed with Noah So, Bowden Grubisich and Hudson Grubisich in the 400 freestyle relay, where they earned swam to second place in 3:12.86.
Friedel was named the swimmer of the meet and his time of 45.85 as the lead leg in the 400 free relay broke the school record as well as a 30-year district record.
“Augustus trains so hard and his time in the freestyle has really come along,” head coach Phillips Wiggins said. “Hopefully he’ll place a little higher at state. He is seeded fourth in the 500 free and seventh in the 200 free. This result last weekend was great to see because he is polite and a nice, young man. He is the ultimate trainer and is good in the classroom. He’s just a well-rounded young man.”
So, a sophomore, added a second state qualification in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.68.
