The commander of the Nimitz Class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis has named a sailor from Collin County as the ship’s warfighter of the week, the Navy announced.
Gunner’s Mate Seaman Gwenivere Zambo of Lavon was presented the award by Capt. Matthew Kiser aboard the ship in Newport News, Virginia.
According to the award citation, Zambo was instrumental in the qualification of security and weapons department personnel on the use and employment of the 9mm Sig Sauer M18 pistol.
“Beyond the firing line, she demonstrated exceptional initiative and commitment by single-handedly completing four vital preservation projects within her division,” the citation said.
The Stennis is in Newport News Shipbuilding conducting refueling and complex overhaul to prepare the ship for the second half of its 50-year service life.
