MCKINNEY – Head coach Kristen Campbell watched her Sachse girls soccer team erase a one-goal deficit once during Thursday’s Class 6A Division I state semifinal match against Keller.
Lady Mustangs’ sophomore midfielder Emma Ramirez fired a shot into the right side of the net for a strike with 10:20 remaining in the second half, and Campbell liked the momentum that goal created for her team, especially with overtime approaching.
Unfortunately for the Lady Mustangs, Ramirez’s tally proved to be the only goal of the night in a season-ending 2-1 loss to the Keller Lady Indians at McKinney ISD Stadium.
“We had a lot of momentum and were playing really well prior to that goal,” Campbell said.
Ella Gutierrez scored the game-winning goal with 7:20 left in the second overtime period. After a pass by Katelyn Prichard set up Gutierrez from 13 yards out, Gutierrez beat Sachse goalkeeper Sydney Miller in a one-on-one battle in the middle of the field and scored for a 2-1 Keller lead, and that goal held up.
Following the conclusion of the game, Sachse High principal Shae Creel and girls athletic coordinator Donna McCullough placed medals around the necks of each player. A trophy presentation followed.
Sachse finished with a 24-3 record and was a state semifinalist for the first time in Campbell’s tenure as head coach.
“This team made history and absolutely made their mark at Sachse,” she said. “I cannot explain how proud I am of this group. They have the most determination. They came together as a team and did everything that they could. We just came up a little short.”
