Local students excel at district ag shows

Students from Garland and Wylie ISDs showcased months of hard work and hands-on agricultural experience during their respective annual FFA Show & Sales, both held last week.

Garland ISD hosted its 82nd annual Ag Show & Sale March 24–27 at the district’s Agricultural Training Center, while Wylie ISD held its 59th annual event March 22–28 at the F.O. Birmingham Agricultural Center.

Both events featured livestock competitions, student projects and auctions, highlighting the dedication of area youth exhibitors and the continued community support for agricultural programs.

GISD students competed across a variety of divisions, including cattle, swine, goats, sheep and small animals, earning top honors in several categories.

Bailey Browne earned Reserve Champion in market steer and multiple championships in breeding rabbits, including Grand Champion Rabbit Showman, along with a breeding heifer American Division Champion title.

Christopher Agnew’s breeding heifer entry was named Exotic Reserve Division Champion. 

Avery Browne was recognized as Premier Hog Exhibitor along with showing the grand Champion market hog and earning top placements across multiple categories.

Market Hog exhibitors also included Ailyn Avila and Gabriella Mladenka with first-place finishes, while Emma Muffett placed second and Trinity Witt finished fourth. Alexis Holder added a sixth-place finish.

The goat division featured strong performances from Grayce Clark, the Commercial Division Champion in breeding goats, and Aubrey Morgan, Commercial Division Reserve Champion. Caitlyn Casey and Gabriella Mladenka each secured first-place finishes in market goat and breeding goat classes, respectively. Kira Hinojosa earned first place in class, and both Lucia Frias and Helen Novak earned second in class in market goats. Madelyn Johnson placed third. Avery Werner earned second in both market and breeding goat categories. 

In market sheep competition, Sophia Mladenka earned first place in class, while Grace Hunt Browne and Annelle Leff each placed second. Luxiee Edwards placed third. 

The Overall Grand Champion in breeding rabbits was Annelle Leff. Valerie Mendoza was named Commercial Division Champion in breeding rabbits, and Annelle was the Fancy Division Champion. Carolina Guzman earned second and third place in Fancy Sr. Buck. 

The annual GISD event concluded with a livestock sale March 27.

Wylie ISD Show & Sale results

Wylie ISD’s 59th annual Show & Sale featured a full slate of competitions, including horticulture, shop projects, food entries and livestock shows, continuing a long-standing community tradition.

Top honors were awarded across multiple categories.

In horticulture, TJ Weir earned Grand Champion with a silk flower entry, while Bree Willoughby was named Reserve Grand Champion for wreath and topiary work. Additional top finishers included Caleigh Nicholls, Reese Pyle, Ryleigh Thomason and Chloe Cooper.

Weir also earned Grand Champion in shop with a combo wood/metal project, while Kira Sears secured Reserve Grand Champion in wood. Ryan Parman led the metal category.

In the food division, Charlee Wilson earned Grand Champion honors with cookies, while Carrick Wallis was named Reserve Grand Champion with a cake entry. Reese Pyle earned first in the candy category, and Emory Reynolds earned top honors in pies. Jack Meyer-Marietta and Kaitlyn Boles each earned first in breads and preserved savory, respectively. 

Rabbit exhibitors saw Adeline McKay earn both Grand and Reserve Grand Champion in market rabbits, while Charlee Wilson was named Grand Champion in breeding rabbits. Jillian Logan earned Reserve Grand Champion in breeding rabbits and also took the top two spots in broilers.

In livestock events, Juliet Salazar delivered a standout performance, earning Grand Champion honors in market lamb, market goat and breeding goat categories. Mimi Erwin earned Reserve Grand Champion Market Goat and Grand Champion Showmanship, while Abby Felthous earned Reserve Showmanship honors.

Ryan Parman led the swine division with Grand Champion honors in showmanship and both breeding and market swine, while Chloe Cooper earned Reserve Grand Champion Market Swine and additional showmanship awards. Kolt Wallis was named Reserve Grand Champion in breeding swine. 

The first-place heifer was shown by Ryleigh Thomason who also earned the Grand Champion title in cattle showmanship. Bree Willoughby had the Grand Champion Market Steer, and Blaire Bryeans showed the Reserve Grand Champion.
