A community event honoring military service members and supporting veterans in need will return later this month, with organizers expanding both participation opportunities and charitable outreach.

The annual Run for Our Heroes, hosted by the 1LT Robert F. Welch III Charity, will take place Saturday, April 25, at Olde City Park in Wylie. Opening ceremonies begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by a 5K and 1-mile fun run at 9 a.m.

This year’s event also marks a meaningful milestone for organizer Becky Welch. “This will be marking the 15th Angelversary of when we lost Rob and have been doing this event,” said Welch, whose late husband, 1st Lt. Robert F. Welch III, is the event’s namesake.

The event is designed to bring the community together while raising awareness and support for veterans, particularly those facing hardship.

In addition to the race, attendees can enjoy a vendor fair, a silent auction and family-friendly activities. Live music will begin at 10 a.m. and continue through 3 p.m., featuring performances by Fools Gold, Jesse Watts and The Texas Jazz Express. Carter BloodCare will be on-site for anyone who wishes to donate.

A free meal for military veterans and first responders will be served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot.

Organizers are also encouraging community members to participate in a service project aimed at helping homeless veterans. The initiative focuses on assembling “blessing bags” filled with essential items, with deodorant and socks among the most urgently needed supplies.

Donations can be made by purchasing items through an online wish list or by dropping off supplies locally. Items may be delivered to the 1LT Robert F. Welch III Charity at 617 Odenville Drive in Wylie.

Registration for the run is $10 for basic entry or $25, which includes a race shirt. Proceeds from the event and related donations will support programs that assist veterans in the community.
