SACHSE — A fast start was not enough for the Lady Mustangs, as Rowlett used a pair of big innings to pull away for a 16-8 win.
Sachse (11-5 in District 9-6A) came in riding a four-game winning streak and looking to stay in control of its playoff push.
Although the loss snapped Sachse’s win streak, the Lady Mustangs were on the receiving end of good news from less than 10 miles away. Wylie defeated Wylie East 3-2 in nine innings, a loss that eliminated the Lady Raiders from playoff contention while clinching postseason berths for both Rowlett and Sachse.
Rowlett struck first in the top of the opening inning, taking a 1-0 lead, but Sachse answered immediately.
Kendyl Cruz tied the game at 1-1 after being driven in by Maya McClarity, and the Lady Mustangs kept the momentum going. Xochitl Mendoza brought home Brooke Robinson to give Sachse a 2-1 lead, and Alexandra Valencia later drove in McClarity to cap a three-run inning.
Sachse led 3-1 after the first and appeared to be in control early. That changed quickly in the second inning.
Rowlett responded with a five-run frame, capitalizing on key moments and timely hitting to flip the game. The Lady Eagles regained the lead at 4-3 and continued to add on, eventually taking a 6-3 advantage heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Rowlett’s lead grew to 12-3 in the fifth before McClarity provided a spark for Sachse with a solo home run, cutting the deficit to 12-4.
The Lady Mustangs showed strong resilience in the sixth inning.
Alicia Payne led the charge with a triple, and Cruz later scored to make it 12-5. The highlight came moments later, as Jaycie Watson delivered a three-run home run to cut the deficit to 12-8.
Rowlett responded in the seventh inning, scoring four more runs to put the game out of reach and secure the 16-8 victory.
