A pitcher’s duel turned into a late-inning thriller that slipped away from the Sachse Mustangs as Rowlett rallied in the seventh inning to claim a 3-1 win and secure the District 9-6A championship.
For much of the night, Sachse controlled the pace behind strong pitching and timely defensive plays.
Rowlett threatened early in the first inning, putting multiple runners on base, but the Mustangs worked out of trouble to keep the game scoreless. That defensive intensity carried into the second and third innings, where Sachse continued to make key stops, including a standout play at the plate in the third that cut down a Rowlett runner attempting to score from third. The Mustangs responded immediately.
In the bottom of the third, Sachse broke through with aggressive baserunning, as Aaron Silva stole home to take a 1-0 lead.
The momentum carried into the middle innings as the Mustangs continued to rely on disciplined pitching and a steady defensive effort to hold off Rowlett’s offense.
The pitching of Cade Burkey kept Rowlett off the scoreboard. He tossed five shutout innings with two strikeouts before handing the ball over to Greyson Darden.
Darden turned in a strong performance on the mound, highlighted by a dominant sixth inning in which he allowed no baserunners. His ability to keep the Eagles off balance helped preserve the narrow lead and put Sachse in position to close out the game.
Through six innings, the Mustangs appeared poised to secure the win, but the seventh inning brought a sudden shift.
Rowlett opened the frame with a leadoff baserunner and quickly applied pressure, loading the bases with no outs. A bases-loaded walk tied the game at 1-1, and moments later, a clutch hit to center field brought in two more runs, giving the Eagles their first lead of the night at 3-1.
Sachse managed to limit further damage with a crucial double play, keeping the deficit within reach and setting up a final opportunity in the bottom half of the inning.
The Mustangs showed resilience, putting runners on base, including a walk to Noah Siddall and another baserunner to bring the tying run into play. However, Rowlett’s defense held firm, recording the final outs on a fly ball to secure the victory.
After the game, Sachse head coach Chris Burrow emphasized the need for timely hitting while acknowledging the team’s effort.
“We’ve just got to hit the ball a little better and get some timely hits,” Burrow said. “We did hit the ball, and they happened to be in the right place at the right time a couple of times. The ball just didn’t bounce our way tonight. Sometimes in baseball, it happens.”
Burrow also expressed pride in his team’s performance despite the outcome.
“I’m proud of my pitching staff tonight, proud of the defense, and the guys fought hard,” he said. “We’ve just got to keep our heads up and go get next week.”
