Five days after seeing its aspirations of another district title win denied by Rowlett, the Sachse baseball team quickly turned the page and used a relentless offense to dominate Rockwall-Heath 14-4 in a run-rule win in Game 1 of a Class 6A Division I bi-district playoff series at Rockwall-Heath on Wednesday.

A six-run top of the second inning set the tone.

Colt Upchurch drove in the game’s first run with an RBI single. Two batters later, a defensive error by the Hawks plated the second run for the Mustangs. Greyson Darden added a two-run single. Julian Moreno capped off the inning with a two-run double for a commanding 6-0 Sachse lead.

Sachse pounded out 16 hits, with each Mustang recording at least one hit. Darden had a big day at the plate, collecting four hits and four RBIs. Upchurch set the tables at the top of the lineup, posting two hits and three RBIs. Moreno, Nathan Sereseroz and Will Martin posted two hits apiece.

That proved to be more than enough run support for Cade Burkey. Burkey worked around four runs and six hits with two strikeouts over six innings.

Sachse took an 8-0 lead on a Ponce RBI double in the in third.

Rockwall-Heath made things interesting a short time later, reducing its deficit to 8-3 after a two-run double and an RBI sacrifice fly in the third inning.

The Hawks got as close as 9-4, but a five-run outburst by Sachse in the top of the sixth allowed the Mustangs to seize the momentum for good. Martin and Darden capped off the big inning with back-to-back singles, with Martin’s one-base hit increasing Sachse’s lead to 14-4.

Sachse will have two chances to close out Rockwall-Heath on its home field. Game 2 is set for 7 p.m. tonight. If necessary, Game 3 will be played at 7 p.m. Friday.
