Before the start of Game 2 of a Class 6A Division I playoff series against Rockwall-Heath, Sachse head baseball coach Chris Burrow spoke to his players about living in the moment. Burrow’s hitters listened loud and clear, and it sparked one final surge that propelled the Mustangs into the area round.
Trailing 5-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Sachse responded with a five-run outburst, including the go-ahead RBI single by junior Jacob Ponce. A scoreless seventh inning from junior relief pitcher Carson DaSilva clinched a 7-5 come-from-behind win for the Mustangs, who advanced to the area round.
Sachse will likely play Waxahachie in the area round this week at a time and location to be determined. Waxahachie was leading Bryan 11-2 when Game 2 of their bi-district series was suspended because of lighting in the area. The remainder of the game was expected to be made up Friday in Waco.
“Before the game, I spoke to the guys about being in the present – being present in each at bat, not looking ahead to their next at bat,” Burrow said. “They did a good job of not getting big with their swings. The goal was to get to first base, and they did that.”
