The efforts of the CERT team were recognized at the Jan 18 council meeting last week.
The team was recognized with a plaque by Mayor Mike Felix.
Fire Lt. James Marple gave a summary of the Sachse Community Emergency Response Team activities with a timeline regarding the teams’ actions in response to the recent tornado. He said the CERT team has been a strong regional partner for many years, providing trained manpower to the city and neighbors when called.
“Several years ago, former Fire Chief Doug Kendrick signed an agreement with Rowlett, which placed our team under the umbrella of Rowlett’s Citizen Corp Council,” Marple said. “That agreement strengthened our regional ties and reach. Our team frequently supports Rowlett activities, we train together, and we deploy together when called.”
Marple said that the CERT program is one that FEMA “got right”.
“Our program is well recognized by the Council of Governments in Arlington and throughout North Texas,” he said. “Little did we know what we would face on Dec 26 and the week to follow. That nightmare of a weather event was one we trained for, with the hope of never needing to apply our skills.”
The lieutenant said that fateful Saturday morning started with a National Weather Service bulletin alerting the public to the potential risk of flooding, severe thunderstorms and even a slight risk of tornadoes.
