A 32-year-old Dallas man died Saturday evening of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following a lengthy car chase that also involved shots being fired at officers, the Garland Police Department reported.

A 28-year-old Dallas woman also was arrested — she was later released after further investigation — when she attempted to flee the scene, it was reported.

Alfredo Vargas Patino was found dead in the vehicle after officers, including those from a SWAT team, attempted to contact him once the car came to a stop in a parking lot, police said. Officers also arrested and later released Vanessa Barron after she allegedly fled the scene, reports said.

The incident reportedly occurred after Garland Police responded to a domestic disturbance call in the area of Centreville Road and Broadway Boulevard. A female caller reportedly advised that her ex-boyfriend, who had allegedly threatened to kill her, and who was driving a black Chevrolet passenger vehicle, was following her, police said.

Reports said officers located the suspected vehicle on Centreville Road near the LBJ Freeway, and attempted to stop it. However, a chase reportedly ensued, during which someone in the car allegedly fired shots at the officers. Officers fired no shots during the entire incident, reports said.

The high-speed pursuit took officers through Dallas, Farmers Branch, Irving and Coppell, reports said, before Garland police officers got the suspected vehicle to veer off into a parking lot, where it came to a stop.

Garland police also reported there was a warrant for Patino for a family violence-related offense.
