One vehicle involved in fatal hit and run identified; no charges filed

by | Aug 2, 2016 | Latest

Garland traffic investigators have identified one driver and vehicle involved in the hit and run accident that occurred in the early morning hours on July 31, the Garland Police Department reported.  The driver of a Ford Explorer contacted investigators after seeing the news, they said..

AN investigation revealed that the driver of the Explorer was involved in the accident but no charges are being filed.

Traffic investigators are continuing their efforts in an attempt to locate other vehicles who may have been involved in the accident.  If anyone has any information about the crash they are asked to contact the Garland Police Department at  972-485-4840.

On July 31 at approximately 3:30 am, the Garland police responded to the report of an accident, where a subject had been run over in the 12500 block of E. LBJ Freeway.  Officers arrived and observed a subject lying on the ground in the middle of the highway, police said.  The responding officers then shut down the highway and notified traffic investigators.

Garland traffic investigators responded and reportedly determined that a blue Honda passenger car, which was occupied by a driver and a front passenger, was traveling eastbound on LBJ Freeway at Northwest Highway.  For unknown reasons, police reported, the Honda lost control, causing it to strike a guard rail on the right side shoulder of the highway.  The Honda became disabled and then came to rest sideways with the front end of the vehicle on the right shoulder and rear end of the vehicle in the right hand lane of traffic, according to the police.

A white Toyota passenger car reportedly was traveling eastbound in the right hand lane and was reported to have struck the passenger side of the Honda, police said.  This caused the Honda driver, identified as 19 year old Mario Flores of Dallas, to be ejected, it was reported, and land in the main lanes of traffic on LBJ Freeway.

The driver was then struck by several vehicles who fled the location, police said, and he was later pronounced dead at the scene.  The passenger in the Honda was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
