Eight days after senior Charish Thompson became the all-time leading scorer for the Sachse girls basketball team, the George Washington University signee helped to lead the Lady Mustangs to the consolation championship in the Sandra Meadows Classic in Duncanville. She was named to the all-tournament team.
Thompson scored 20 points and her sister, Trinity, added 13 in a dominant 62-27 for the 20th-ranked team in Class 6A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches over 6A’s No. 10 Cedar Park Vista Ridge.
The win capped off a string of four straight victories for Sachse (20-5) after they dropped a close 52-48 decision to Brentwood (Calif.) to tip off the three-day tournament on Thursday, Dec. 16.
The Lady Mustangs rebounded with wins over Prestonwood Christian (55-54), Mesquite Horn (55-37) and 5A’s No. 3 Frisco Wakeland (66-52) before toppling Vista Ridge in their final game.
Sachse outscored Wakeland 42-28 in the second half after the score was deadlocked at 24-24 at halftime. Trinity Thompson poured in 26 points, followed by 17 from Arianna Gregory and 14 from Charish Thompson.
Charish Thompson became Sachse’s all-time leading scorer after scoring the 1,626th point of her standout high school career in a 71-31 win for the Lady Mustangs over South Garland on Dec. 20.
Sachse’s boys, meanwhile, went 1-2 at the Allen In-N-Out Burger Holiday Invitational last week.
The Mustangs began with a heartbreaking 69-68 loss to Mesquite Horn on Thursday, Dec. 26.
The Jaguars blocked a 3-pointer in the game’s final seconds to send the Mustangs to a one-point loss.
Sachse appeared to be in control after the Mustangs gained a 52-38 lead with 3:03 left in the third quarter after two Banks free throws.
Brayden Banks led Sachse in scoring with 25 points. Austin Young tallied 14 points in the loss. Matthew Hudgins added 11 points with three 3-pointers.
However, Sachse struggled against Mesquite Horn’s defensive pressure in the second half and also struggled to defend at the rim, allowing the Jaguars to mount a late comeback.
Horn converted layup after layup in the fourth quarter, taking a 64-60 lead with 5:05 left in the ballgame after a CJ Jones Jr. field goal.
Sachse got to within 69-68 after a Banks layup with 58 seconds remaining, but Owens’ block of Hudgins at the buzzer allowed the Jaguars to escape with the win.
Plano out-dueled Sachse 53-39 in the next game for the Mustangs in Allen, but Sachse finished on a high note with a 51-50 triumph over Frisco Independence.
