JACKSONVILLE — Through the first three rounds of the Class 6A Division I playoffs, the Sachse girls’ soccer team had a knack for finding the back of the net at the most opportune time.
Freshman Emma Ramirez-Acosta scored the final goal in penalty kicks in a shootout win over Rockwall in bi-district. Two rounds later in the regional semifinals, senior Raeya Carthon scored halfway through the second overtime of an eventual 3-2 victory for Sachse over Klein Oak.
Fast forward to the Tuesday, April 1, regional final, Sachse generated several scoring chances. But for as hard as the Lady Mustangs battled, they were unable to find the back of the net in a 1-0 loss to The Woodlands from the Tomato Bowl.
“They left everything out there,” said Kristen Campbell, Sachse head coach. “It’s been a long journey. That’s the furthest that I’ve been with them. I told them after the game how proud I was of them. They fought until the end.”
The Woodlands took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute on a goal from sophomore Lexi Baker, and the Lady Highlanders never looked back as they advanced to the state semifinals, where they will play Region I-6A Division I winner Coppell on Friday from Georgetown ISD Stadium.
Sachse ended one of its best seasons in program history with an 18-6-2 record.
