Sachse City Council held a special meeting Tuesday, May 13 to officially canvass the results of the May 3 general and special elections, certifying the winners of key municipal races and the outcome of a local tax proposition.
During the meeting, council approved an ordinance declaring Jeff Bickerstaff the elected mayor after he received 1,464 votes, or 61.49%, defeating challenger Matthew Holboke.
In the race for Councilmember Place 5, Lindsey Buhler secured 69.67% of the vote with 1,723 ballots cast her favor, while Rafay Shaikh garnered 750 votes. Matt Prestenberg was elected to Councilmember Place 6 with 1,068 votes, or 62.64%, defeating Gurvinder Singh.
Council also certified the results of a special election to reauthorize the city’s one-fourth of one percent sales and use tax dedicated to street maintenance and repair.
Proposition A passed with 1,917 votes in favor, or 81.19%, and 444 votes, or 18.81%, against. The tax, which must be reauthorized every four years under the Texas Tax Code, will continue to provide revenue for municipal infrastructure upkeep.
Both ordinances were approved unanimously by the council following motions and seconds from councilmembers.
