Another year has come and gone for student-athletes at Sachse High School.
It was a successful one in so many ways.
Here are the highlights from an incredible winter 2024-25 season for Sachse. The final part of the three-part series, spring sports, will appear in the July 3 edition of The Sachse News.
Girls’ soccer makes historic run to regional final:
The Lady Mustangs have won at least playoff game in three of the previous four seasons, and during the 2024 campaign, advanced to the third round for the first time since 2018. However, a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Rockwall left Sachse eager for more.
This season, the Lady Mustangs were determined to build on that run—and they did just that, advancing all the way to the Region II-6A Division I final for one of the deepest postseason showings in program history. They avenged last year’s loss to Rockwall with a shootout win in bi-district, followed by a 5-0 rout of Waco Midway in the area round and a thrilling 3-2 victory over Klein Oak in the regional semifinals. Sachse’s season ended in a hard-fought 1-0 loss to The Woodlands in the regional final.
Incoming senior Kate McCallister was named District 9-6A Midfielder of the Year after scoring 20 goals and tallying 10 assists. Rising senior Clara Dowdle earned 9-6A Defender of the Year honors for the second consecutive year.
Boys’ soccer battles despite coaching change
Sachse’s boys’ soccer team faced a midseason coaching change when Shane Montgomery was elevated to head coach after Benjamin Buentello stepped down.
Despite the shift, the Mustangs posted a 12-8 overall record—their eighth straight winning season—including a 9-7 mark in district play. However, the team struggled down the stretch, losing three of its final four games and missing the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade.
Sachse graduated five all-district honorees but returns four players who earned All-District 9-6A recognition: rising junior defender Jovanni Vazquez, incoming senior midfielder Daniel Dominguez-Carrero, junior forward Aiden Ronquillo, and sophomore midfielder Matvey Strelchik.
District domination continues for Lady Mustang basketball team:
The Sachse girls’ basketball team turned in another dominant season in district play.
Fueled by a stifling defense and an opportunistic transition offense, the Lady Mustangs rolled through District 9-6A, winning all but one game by double digits—including six victories by at least 40 points. That dominance translated into a second straight undefeated district season and another championship.
Sachse edged Rockwall 41-36 in bi-district before a controversial defensive foul with under 10 seconds remaining allowed Duncanville to escape with a 39-38 win in the area round of the Class 6A Division I playoffs
Alumna forward Charish Thompson was named District MVP for the second year in a row averaging 16.7 points per game. Her sister, rising sophomore Trinity Thompson earned 9-6A Defensive Player of the Year.
Mustang boys conclude Mikesell era:
One of the most successful coaches in program history, Zachary Mikesell, stepped down as head coach of the Sachse boys’ basketball team to take over the same role at Prosper Richland, a new school opening in August.
His final season was another strong one, as he led the Mustangs to the playoffs for the sixth time in seven years. Sachse went 12-4 in District 9-6A to finish third, but its season ended with a 55-42 loss to Rockwall in the bi-district round.
Sachse was led offensively by alums Austin Young, Ngozi Ofili and Maddox Belino. New head coach Micah Moore will look to incoming seniors Brayden Banks and Matthew Hudgins to lead the team next season.
Delhomme, Freidel swim in state meet:
Sachse alumna Ashley Delhomme and rising junior Augustus Friedel concluded their season at the UIL Class 6A state swimming and diving championships.
Delhomme made history by becoming the first Sachse swimmer to compete in a state final. In her final high school competition, she placed 12th overall in diving with a total score of 361.2 points.
Friedel finished 15th in the boys’ 100-meter butterfly with a time of 49.83 seconds.
