Sachse continues to be home to some of District 9-6A’s most competitive teams—and the 2024–25 school year showcased that talent across the board.

The Sachse News presents its final installment of a three-part series honoring the top athletic moments, student-athletes, teams and performances from the past year.

Categories for the inaugural C&S Media High School sports awards were selected by sports editor David Wolman, with winners published over three weeks.

Part I (July 10): Biggest Story, Breakthrough Moment, Newcomer of the Year and Best Team.

Part II (July 17): Best Game, Best Finish, Biggest Upset and Multi-Sport Athlete of the Year.

The series wraps up this week with Coach of the Year, Most Improved Athlete, Best Female Athlete and Best Male Athlete.

Here are the winners of this week’s awards.

Coach of the Year: Kristen Campbell, Girls Soccer

Coming off a 21-win season and a third-round playoff appearance, the Lady Mustangs entered this year needing to replace 10 seniors.

Still, head coach Kristen Campbell returned several experienced players—and challenged them to surpass what they’d accomplished before.

They did just that. Campbell guided the Lady Mustangs to an 18-6 record and one of their longest playoff runs in program history. Sachse booked a berth in the Region II-6A Division I final, falling 1–0 to The Woodlands in a tightly contested match.

Most Improved Athlete: Zachary Evans, Baseball

Evans wasn’t satisfied with his junior season, despite earning second-team all-district honors at infield.

With just one more season left in high school, he went to work in the weight room.

As a senior, Evans was named District 9-6A Most Valuable Player and earned a spot on the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association’s Class 6A all-state third team.

Evans didn’t allow a run in district play while striking out 24 in four mound appearances. At the plate, he hit .412 in district with 16 RBIs, helping Sachse secure its third consecutive district title.

Best Female Athlete: Charish Thompson, Girls Basketball

Thompson had already helped the Lady Mustangs reach key program milestones—but this year, she made history of her own.

During a Dec. 20, 2024, home game vs. South Garland, she became the program’s all-time leader in both single-season and career points, surpassing marks previously held by Adhel Tac (2020) and Avery Crouse (2019).

Thompson, a Cal Poly signee, was the driving force behind Sachse’s offense, often setting the tone early with strong first-quarter scoring both near the basket and behind the three-point line. She led the Lady Mustangs to a 31-win season—setting a new school record—and a second straight 16–0 district record. Thompson was named District 9-6A MVP for the second consecutive season as Sachse reached the area round of the Class 6A playoffs.

Best Male Athlete: Brendon Haygood, Football

With quarterback Brenden George graduating after a stellar 2023 campaign, Sachse had to shift its offensive identity.

Enter Brendon Haygood.

Fortunately for Sachse, Haygood was already putting up big numbers for the Mustangs. The University of Missouri signee took on a bigger role and delivered a dominant senior season on the ground. After rushing for 938 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior, Haygood exploded for 1,590 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior—including a 98-yard score in a 44–17 win over Wylie on Sept. 19.

His performance powered Sachse to a second consecutive undefeated district title and a third straight playoff appearance. He was named District 9-6A Most Valuable Player.
