The second half of last Thursday’s game was about survival for Sachse.

After the Mustangs’ defense pitched a first-half shutout, the Patriots’ athleticism began to overwhelm Sachse.

Lakeview Centennial junior quarterback Dakari Jernigan used his legs and arms to lead the Patriots on the comeback trail. What was a 17-0 lead for the Mustangs was reduced to 17-14 after senior George Zigler hauled in a 58-yard touchdown reception from Jernigan with 6:36 left.

Lakeview Centennial had a chance to take their first lead of the night with less than two minutes remaining, but senior Kaeden Swann hauled in an interception with 1:23 left and Sachse held on for a 17-14 win at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.

Sachse (3-2, 2-1) took a 7-0 lead after senior running back Roderick Rainwater capped off a time-consuming drive with a 3-yard touchdown with 6:14 left in the first quarter.

Rainwater was the workhorse in the Mustangs’ backfield, posting 85 rushing yards on 31 carries.

A fumble recovery by senior Julian Cole early in the second quarter led to a Brison 37-yard field goal for a 10-0 Sachse lead.

The Mustangs finished the night with six sacks and forced three Lakeview Centennial turnovers.

Sachse gained a further stranglehold of the game after a facemask penalty by Lakeview Centennial on a punt return by junior Brendon Quinn gave the Mustangs starting field position at the Patriots’ 11-yard line. Two plays later, Quinn took the handoff and ran from the three-yard line for a touchdown, and a 17-0 Mustangs lead with 5:54 left in the second quarter.
