MABANK – One thing that Sachse head girls basketball coach Donna McCullough wished her Lady Mustangs had more of during a Feb. 17 Class 6A Division I bi-district playoff game against Tyler Legacy was time.
Sachse was beginning to get a good feel for Tyler Legacy’s offense, scoring more points in transition, executing its offensive sets with more precision, rebounding better and getting to the free-throw line with more regularity. The improvement the Lady Mustangs made in those facets of their game had them believing they could rally from a 20-point third-quarter deficit.
Junior guard Lily Burrow had her Sachse teammates on the bench jumping up and down after she made a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to six points with 1:48 left. However, Sachse was unable to get any closer.
Tyler Legacy finished off a 54-41 win at Mabank High School from the free-throw line. The Lady Raiders made 9 of 12 attempts over the final 1:40 to punch their ticket to the area round.
Despite watching her team come up just short, McCullough said she was proud of how her team fought back from deficits of 13 and 20 points.
“To do that against that team is pretty good,” McCullough said. “It was just back and forth and not giving up. We were trying to make things happen on the fly and listening to coaching and doing what they were supposed to be doing. They did a great job of that. I wish we had a few more minutes.”
Burrow finished with nine points. Sophomore Trinity Thompson, who missed last year’s playoffs with a lower-body injury, scored 17 points in her postseason debut.
