Sachse did not win a district championship on Friday, but it did host a trophy.
The “Hammer Bowl” rivalry between Sachse and Rowlett has produced several classic games since its inception in 2004 and added another chapter.
In a game that featured nearly 1,000 yards of total offense, it was the Mustangs who were able to make the plays they needed to secure a 45-35 victory in a thriller at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.
Sachse remains undefeated overall at 5-0, and remains tied atop the 9-6A standings with Wylie East at 2-0, while the Eagles fall to 2-3 and 1-1.
Trailing 35-27 with 4:04 remaining in the third quarter, Sachse scored the game’s final 18 points.
The Mustangs tied it up at 35-35 after a 74-yard touchdown pass from Christian McCaffrey to DJ Doyle and subsequent 2-point conversion run by Brendon Quinn. Doyle caught four passes for 177 yards. McCaffrey completed 11 of 23 through the air for 276 yards and three touchdowns in the win.
Quinn put Sachse ahead 42-35 after scoring on a 35-yard touchdown run with 1:03 remaining in the third quarter. He finished with 180 yards rushing on 23 carries with two touchdowns.
Jonathan Fuentes added an 18-yard field goal with 2:55 remaining in the ballgame for a 45-35 Mustangs lead.
