The Mustangs left little doubt as to who was the best of the 10-6A gridiron gladiators, as Sachse went 10-0 (6-0 in district) and easily captured a district crown. However, the 2016 season ended two games into the playoffs, when state finalist The Woodlands outlasted the high-powered Mustangs 51-40 in the area round.

It was déjà vu on the volleyball court, where head coach Rikki Jones guided the Lady Mustangs to another playoff appearance — they tied Rowlett for the 10-6A crown — that ended with tough second-round loss to a solid Rockwall team.

“It really has been a good year, and these kids are so young,” Jones said after the Rockwall loss. “We still had some seniors in important positions, but (overall) it is young team. We’ve progressed, and I think we met our goals.”

Another team that “progressed” quite nicely was the Lady Mustang basketball team, which also advanced into the second round before falling to Rockwall. This one was a 46-45 last-minute loss.

Soccer is where Sachse excelled in both girls’ and boys’ competitions, as the former reached the Region II semifinals before falling to Hendrickson, while the latter advanced all the way to the finals before going down at the hands of eventual state champ Jesuit.

A little later in the spring, Sachse baseball took Jesuit to three games before falling to the defending state champ in the bi-district round. That’s the same place Sachse softball saw its season conclude at the hands of Lake Highlands.

In track and field, senior Nick Alexander advanced to state in the 200, where he finished his prep career with a sixth-place finish.
