Reading Rocket blasts students to success

by | Jul 4, 2019 | Latest

Almost 300 second graders spent last month playing games, solving problems and working in teams to get a head start on testing.

Reading Rocket is new this year, but still managed to draw a crowd of kids eager to learn. The program is open to Garland ISD students who just completed second grade and are having trouble reading.

“STAAR testing begins at the third grade level, so we’re working to close those gaps between second and third grades,” said Stacy Singleton, Student Success Program Coordinator. “We’re focusing on students that have scored lower on reading, giving them a boost before they start third grade. We do some enrichment and literacy. The big thing is, we want it to be fun for the kiddos and have a good atmosphere.”
