The senior was named to the All-USA Texas team as a first-team defensive back.

Trinity Cedar Hill’s Lewis, Haltom’s Keyon Shannon and Bishop Dunne’s Brian Williams joined him.

In earlier honors, Brooks was picked the Texas Associated Press Sports Editor Class 6A Defensive Player of the Year and first-team corner back. In District 10-6A, he was named the Defensive Player of the Year, first-team cornerback and second-team punt returner.

“For him to be named the top defensive player in all of (Class) 6A is really impressive,” Sachse head coach Mark Behrens said. “Even more impressive is what he does off the field. He’s a 4.0 GPA student and exemplifies what is means to be a student-athlete.”

The Texas High School Coaches Association picked Brooks second-team academic all-state.

Brooks brought the fire in 2018 by breaking the Garland ISD interceptions record with 11 picks in 12 games.

Of that total, five went for touchdowns. He also recorded 12 pass break ups, 31 tackles and returned a punt for a touchdown.

“He has great hands and runs to the ball instead of away from it,” Behrens said.

Garland’s Bobby Boyd held the previous record of 10 picks set in 1955.

Brooks helped lead the Mustangs to a third district title and an appearance in the second round of the 6A Div. I playoffs.

Things pretty much stayed the same for Sachse High School athletics after the Thursday, Feb. 1 UIL realignment.

Football, basketball and volleyball remained with Lakeview Centennial, Naaman Forest, Rowlett, South Garland and North Garland in 10-6A.

Wylie moved over from 6-6A to join the Garland ISD schools.

“It’s kind of what we expected. Picking up Wylie was a good addition,” Sachse head football coach Mark Behrens said.

Wylie was previously in 6-6A with Allen, Plano, Plano East, Plano West, McKinney, Denton Guyer, McKinney Boyd.

The new 10-6A will be used for the 2018-’19 and 2019-’20 school years.

Due to it being an eight-team football district, Sachse will get three non-district games.

Those contests are against Coppell (week one), Euless Trinity (week two as part of the Cotton Bowl Classic) and Plano East (week three).

“We are going to be a young team and we scheduled some tough games to get us ready for district,” Behrens said.

Sachse opens the district slate versus Wylie. Followed by Garland, Lakeview Centennial, Rowlett, Naaman Forest, North Garland and South Garland.

They have the final week of the season off.

“Having that last week off is good if we have some injuries. It’s nice to have that week off at the end so if we get in a groove we don’t have time off to stop the momentum” Behrens said.

Residents want big trucks off Pleasant Valley Road https://sachsenews.com/2017/11/30/residents-want-big-trucks-off-pleasant-valley-road/ Thu, 30 Nov 2017 15:42:24 +0000 https://sachsenews.com/?p=3549 By Greg Ford

A number of Pleasant Valley Road residents have a long-term desire; no more trucks along that thoroughfare.

Specifically, these folks live along a portion, which they say trucks headed to and from C.M. Hinton landfill in Rowlett and elsewhere, use on a regular basis. It is both disruptive from a noise standpoint and dangerous because, according to the residents, the road isn’t designed to handle such large vehicles.

“I’ve gotten pictures of overturned trucks in the last three or four years,” said resident Christie Benator, who lives along the 3600 block of Pleasant Valley with her husband David. “There is no room for error, at all. If they look away, they’re off the road.”

In the short term, this group wants Sachse to pass an ordinance prohibiting trucks from driving along past them on the way back from the landfill. Over the long term, these residents look to build enough community support to force the city into enforcing a “no truck” rule along Pleasant Valley.

“It’s a simple asphalt road with steep sides, and when they do a complete overlay (of asphalt), it doesn’t take more than six months before they have to patch it,” David Benator said.

The trucks that use the 15-year-old regional landfill, which is accessed off Elm Grove Road — vehicles must turn right off Pleasant Valley — come from various locales, including Garland, Sachse and Rowlett, residents said. Also, they say 18-wheelers are now traversing the road as a quicker route, rather than driving on Hwy 78.

Plans call for Old Town to get new look https://sachsenews.com/2017/11/30/plans-call-for-old-town-to-get-new-look/ Thu, 30 Nov 2017 15:40:22 +0000 https://sachsenews.com/?p=3546 By Greg Ford

The city of Sachse approved its comprehensive plan earlier this year. Now, officials are working on achieving its goals.

One area of attention is Old Town, which runs from about Salmon Road to Ben Davis Road north and south along Hwy 78, with development on the east and west side of the highway. The Economic Development Committee owns the property bordered by Fifth Street down to Sachse Road, and back up Sachse Road to Billingsley, city manager Gina Nash noted.

“The EDC is currently in the process of identifying and interviewing developers that have expressed interest in Old Town,” said Dusty McAfee, the development services director for Sachse. “Although a definitive timeline is not yet known, the goal is to see commercial development sometime soon.”

The Sachse Planning and Zoning Commission was scheduled to consider the rezoning and conduct a public hearing regarding the matter during it meet this past Monday. It’s possible that will be discussed at the Dec. 4 Sachse City Council meeting.
