From Staff Reports
When Garland ISD Trustees met during a work session Jan. 12 they learned they will have some work to do as they committed to living healthy by participating in the ‘It’s Time Texas Community Challenge. They sealed the deal with a photo pledge.
The annual campaign encourages individuals, cities, schools and business across the state to exercise and eat properly. Last year, GISD placed second among large districts in Texas.
Health/PE Coordinator Louise Gartrell and Employee Wellness Coordinator Liz Kiertscher hope for a first place finish this year when the contest ends in March.
The board also heard about the new Accelerated Math and Science Program. Launching at North Garland High School in 2016-‘17, the program will give participants the opportunity to advance faster, taking more math and science classes throughout high school. Students choose either a math/science track, fast math/science track or superfast math/science track. Following a successful pilot at NGHS, the program could be expanded to other GISD campuses in the future.
