It’s said pitching and defense wins ball games.
Well, the Lady Mustangs got both last week, as they shut out Garland on April 5 and then North Garland this past Friday.
Even more importantly, the Sachse bats produced 33 hits and 52 runs over that pair of games, as the Lady Mustangs trampled Garland 22-0 in two and a half innings, and then blasted the Lady Raiders 30-0 in three innings.
Those two triumphs improved Sachse’s 11-6A record to 7-3 with four games left on the regular-season schedule.
The first of those took place Tuesday at home against Rockwall, with the season continuing 4 p.m. Friday at Naaman Forest. After that, the Lady Mustangs will host Lakeview Centennial on Tuesday, April and then close out things Friday, April 22 at home against Rowlett.
The postseason will start the weekend of April 30 with the bi-district round; that will pit 11-6A representatives against those from 12-6A. After last week’s action, the Lady Mustangs found third in 11-6A behind Rowlett (10-0) and Rockwall (9-1) and ahead of Garland (5-5) and Naaman Forest (4-6). Rounding out the standings are Tyler Lee (3-7), Lakeview Centennial (1-8) and North Garland (0-10).
Shanna McBroom got the Garland onslaught going with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first, a blast that started a seven-run rally. The Lady Mustangs added 15 more runs in the next inning to put the game away.
McBroom added two more doubles to her total, a number equaled by Emilee McDonald, while Sarah Wheeler, Casey Enna and Savana Williamson. Mikala Douglas earned the win on the mound.
Williamson was winning hurler against the Lady Raiders, striking out six batters in two innings. Sarah Wheeler pitched the final stanza, fanning one North Garland batter in the process.
McBroom again provided the power with another homer, as well as a triple. McDonald and Ochoa each doubled twice for the Sachse, which scored 17 runs in the first inning, eight in the second and five in third to complete the damage.
