The Garland ISD made a big move this past fall, distributing iPads to all high school students, including Sachse. That program will be expanded this coming school year, when GISD middle school students will have the opportunity to work with the technology.

It’s part of the district’s Ready 1:1 program, which is designed to “level the playing field” for all students when it comes to education, as well as provide the chance to improve their learning experience and to “think creatively,” according to the GISD website.

The program is voluntary, and students and parents can opt out of it at any time.

“The district has recently conducted focus group meetings with middle school teachers and students in an effort to identify devices, programs and professional development needed for a successful pilot. Based on the feedback and input from these groups, the district will help select and procure devices that are a best fit for the Middle School Ready 1:1 program. Of course, our board of trustees has been very interested in the implementation, and any proposed changes to the current plan will certainly be taken to the board first,” said GISD Executive Technology Officer Laurie Vondersaar.
